Volunteer Zambia
The Wallace Group is made up of 7 UK Higher Education Institutions that have shared a commitment to support the development of sport in Zambia through the Volunteer Zambia project.
Who we are
The Wallace Group is a partnership created in 2004 by several leading UK universities to support sports development for young people in Zambia.
The partnership embraces: 7 UK universities (Cardiff Metropolitan, Durham, Edinburgh, Â鶹ֱ²¥, Northumbria, St Andrews and Stirling), Volunteer Zambia Foundation and Sport in Action.
What we do
The Wallace Group aims to support the development of long-term mutually beneficial relationships between the UK and Zambia, whilst making a difference to the lives of young Zambian people by empowering and enriching communities, through the power of sport, leadership and education.
Each summer the 7 universities of the Wallace Group team up to send students and staff members out to live in Zambia for 8 weeks, from the period of June-October. Working with (The largest Zambian Sporting NGO), the student volunteers help to deliver sport development programmes to over 160,000 young people.
How we do it
Here at Â鶹ֱ²¥ University we look to select 6 students each year to represent the University in Zambia by undertaking the voluntary role of ‘Student Sport Development Officer’ in one of the following areas:
- Netball Development Officer
- Basketball Development Officer
- Women's Football Development Officer
- Media, Marketing & Communications Officer
- Enterprise Officer
- Duke of Edinburgh Officer
The recruitment & selection process takes place between September & October each year and being part of Volunteer Zambia with Â鶹ֱ²¥ University requires a commitment to personally raising approximately £2500 whilst also contributing to a team fundraising goal of circa £3500.
Alongside this, it is a requirement to commit to an 8-week placement in Zambia over the summer period and attend all relevant training days throughout the year.
