Our User Experience and Service Design programme prepares you for the career you want. Focused heavily on employability, this advanced degree has been developed over the last 10 years in conjunction with industry partners, helping past students launch great careers in User Experience (UX).

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds. You do not need a design background. In fact, some of our most successful students have joined us from fields like business, psychology, and languages. All you need is an interest in people and a curious mind!

Choose your pathway: MA or MSc

This course is unique in being offered as either an MA or an MSc. The core content is very similar, but your final project will differ: choose the MA for a creative, big-thinking project, or the MSc if you want to focus on empirical investigation and data analysis. If you aren't sure which pathway suits you best, don't worry - we will help you decide after you start.

What you will learn

You will develop industry-standard skills in both the creative and analytical sides of UX. This includes designing experiences that embed digital in the physical world, adopting an empathic systemic worldview, and leveraging new technologies like AI and extended reality (XR).

Your core toolkit will cover UX principles, design research methods, systems thinking, service design, prototyping (generative, evaluative, and video), interaction design, teamwork, client-facing skills, and project management. Everything culminates in a major evidence-based project to showcase your work to the world.

This programme is offered alongside a parallel User Experience Design programme. While that pathway focuses on usability and optional specialisms, this User Experience and Service Design programme specifically includes Systems Thinking and Service Design for a broader worldview.

Why you should study this degree

UX and UI specialists are forecast to be one of the fastest growing jobs 2025-30*. UX Designers create the products and services that make life better. Our vision is to produce human-focused and empathetic graduates who can discover opportunities for meaningful innovation, and then design products/services to meet user needs and deliver excellent experiences.

The User Experience and Service Design has six aims:

Nurture a comprehensive intellectual understanding of User Experience and Service Design and the vocational and professional skills required to master connecting theory, creativity and practice.
Foster an innovative, systemic, and disruptive approach to concept development informed by a detailed understanding of people and context through real-world research.
Achieve mastery in conceptualising, designing, and developing transformative, responsible and sustainable digital and non-digital experiences.
Cultivate the organisational, technical, collaborative, and creative skills required to apply User Experience and Service Design across various sectors.
Challenge students' preconceptions of User Experience and Service Design by exposing them to transdisciplinary working through practice-based learning and live industry projects.
Enable students to become independent scholars and practitioners in User Experience and Service Design, preparing them for future study or practice.

In addition, you will work with leading companies on live briefs. We give you opportunities to enter UXD competitions and we will arrange guest lectures on topics of interest.

We will guide you in producing portfolio content that showcases your unique abilities. We will support you in taking the next steps toward your career in UX, helping you become the kind of designer that top companies want.

What you'll study

Our User Experience and Service Design (MA or MSc) programme will give you a solid foundation to develop the skills and knowledge needed for a career as a UX professional. You can also do this programme part-time 鈥� for more information about part-time study patterns, please contact us.

Once you start the programme, it is possible to switch between (1) User Experience and Service Design and (2) User Experience Design if you decide that the other programme suits you better. After the first few weeks, you will choose which award (MA or MSc) you wish to work towards. We will help you select the option that is best for you.

Compulsory

The aim of this module is to introduce the human centred design process and core experience design principles and their application to the design of interactive products and services.

The aim of this module is to introduce postgraduate design students to the principles and practice of human-centered research to identify opportunities for the design of product and service experiences.

The aim of this module is to introduce students to systemic design and its underpinning theoretical foundations from systems thinking. It aims to equip students with systems-oriented frameworks and practices to critically inform the design of systems-conscious/shifting services and experiences.

Compulsory

The aim of the module is to introduce students to the experience/service design profession through the tackling an industry set brief and delivering an evidence-based and meaningful design outcome for a sponsoring organisation. The module will enable students to enhance their professional team-working, collaboration, communication, and reflection skills and support their development towards becoming an effective practitioner.

The aims of this module are to develop students knowledge, understanding and application of service design. It encourages students to utilise a contemporary range of design methods and tools to design original services comprising multiple inter-related touchpoints between system, service, stakeholder, and end user. Further, it also aims to encourage critical discussion of the subject within the broader societal and environmental context.

Compulsory for the MA award

This module aims to equip students with skills and competencies to undertake generative design research and prototyping in their chosen topic of enquiry. Underpinned by a reflective mindset, this module helps students identify the key issues and methodologies appropriate for generative design research and prototyping, in preparation for undertaking a self-directed experience design major project.

Compulsory for the MSc award

This module is designed to help students develop the skills needed to carry out evaluative design research and create prototypes for their chosen topic. It promotes a reflective approach, helping students recognize important issues and methods suitable for evaluative prototyping and design research. This will prepare them for working on their own independent experience design research project.

Compulsory for the MA award

The aim of this module is to develop the student's in-depth knowledge of the UX design process relating to a specific UX design opportunity, in order integrate and apply knowledge, skills and values from other modules in a significant user experience design project.

The student achieves this aim by undertaking an iterative, human-centred design project. This project will address a specific UX design opportunity, and use innovative, best practice design approaches and tools in order to innovate, scope and develop potential solutions that create great user experiences.

The output of the research project will be a high-fidelity concept prototype of a new system/service or product. The module will provide a significant example of the student's design and innovation capability for their CV and portfolio, and will facilitate the student's further development from postgraduate student to UX professional.

Compulsory for the MSc award

The aim of this module is to help students gain a deeper understanding of a topic or problem in UX design. Students will do this by completing a research project that focuses on human-centered design. This project will address a gap in the existing research and use important theories and best practices. Students will create and test a prototype system, service, or product to answer specific research questions.

The project will contribute both ideas and practical solutions to the UX field. It will also give students a strong example of their design and research skills for their CV and portfolio, helping them move from being a student to becoming a UX professional.

How you'll be assessed

We will give you helpful feedback on your work throughout the year to help you develop to your potential. You will be assessed through various coursework, including submission of design projects, group and individual presentations and discussion of work.

The programme is based around a series of lectures, workshops and individual/group independent working. There will also be a series of guest lectures on various professional topics, including career development. We provide teaching material online before the lectures and record the lectures so you can watch them again later. All students, of any nationality, who are from a design-related background should provide a portfolio showing examples of work relevant to the MSc/MA User Experience and Service Design. This should be around 10 pages long and must demonstrate your current understanding of human centred design, including your design process, the project outcome and how you considered the end user experience. Critical reflection on how you could improve your process and project outcomes is encouraged.

Your personal statement must explain your interest in user experience design and why you want to study on the User Experience and Service Design course. If your degree or background means you do not have a portfolio, or your portfolio doesn’t showcase the skills we are looking for, we may ask you to complete a small additional design task to make sure the course is appropriate for you.

The fee stated is for a full-time student undertaking a master’s programme of 180 credits. Part-time students will spread this credit load over a two or more years of study as agreed with the School/Department. Fees will be charged for the credit weighting of modules taken in a given year. The tuition fees payable can be calculated by dividing the published fee by 180 and then multiplying by the number of credits to be taken in the specific year.

Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase in subsequent years by a small amount (will not exceed 5%) to take into account inflationary pressures.

Tracy is a people-centred designer who works in collaboration with industry partners across connected sectors such as transport and domestic energy. She is passionate about using research methods that ensure everyday product/service/system innovations are designed with the end users in mind.

Dr Stuart Cockbill

Senior Lecturer in Design

Dr Stuart Cockbill leads the Undergraduate Design course and is the Module Lead for the Service Design module on this programme. His research applies service design, co-design and systemic thinking, using data to develop future products and services within the energy demand reduction context.

Our students work in many different job roles including UX Designer, UI Designer, User Researcher, Product Manager, Experience Designer, Product Designer, UX Consultant, User Insights Specialist, Service Designer and Digital Consultant. They work in many companies outside the design field, including those in management and IT, that value the user-centred design skills we teach. Some graduates go on to careers in research, teaching or progress onto PhD study.
