Dr Mohammed M. Mabkhot studied Industrial Engineering at King Khalid University, graduating with first-class honours in 2011. He then completed an MSc with first-class honours and a PhD in Manufacturing Systems at King Saud University. In 2020, he joined the Intelligent Automation Centre at Â鶹ֱ²¥ University as a lead architect of the MAESTRO project and later the IRaaS project. During this period, he also completed a second PhD in Cyber-Physical Systems Engineering at Â鶹ֱ²¥ University in 2024.
Before moving to the UK, Mohammed worked as a researcher and lecturer in the Industrial Engineering Department at King Saud University from 2013 to 2019. Prior to that, he spent two years in industry, starting as a Production Supervisor and progressing to Production Manager after one year at ARCOMA. At Â鶹ֱ²¥, he has contributed to major European, UKRI, and Innovate UK projects in manufacturing education, intelligent automation, and aerospace digitalisation.
Mohammed is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the AVRRC: Centre for Virtual Engineering, where he works with Airbus on digital thread architectures, model-based approaches, and cross-system data sharing for complex industrial ecosystems.
Research Interests
Dr Mabkhot’s research interests are driven by the challenge of improving how complex industrial systems are modelled, connected, and evolved across the product lifecycle. His work focuses on model-based systems engineering, digital thread, semantic technologies, knowledge graphs, and intelligent automation, with particular emphasis on trusted data sharing across complex industrial ecosystems.
His current research focuses on operationalising the Digital Thread in aerospace through industrial MBSE (iMBSE) architectures, network-based system representations, and distributed intelligence:
- Industrial Model-Based Systems Engineering (iMBSE)
- Digital Threads and Manufacturing Digital Passport (MDP)
- Aerospace Data and Information Modelling
- Semantic Modelling and network/Knowledge Graphs
- Cyber-Physical Production Systems
- Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems
- Intelligent Automation and Automation Servitisation
- Distributed Systems Intelligence
- Simulation Modelling
- Multi-Criteria Decision Making
- Bio-inspired and Multi-Objective Optimisation
- Production Planning and Scheduling
