Joining the Library

All staff and students are automatically registered with their home campus Library when they join the University. 

Whether enrolled as a student at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ or Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ University London, you will need your ID card to pass through the library barriers on your home campus, as well as to borrow library books.

 

Alumni (Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Campus)

Graduates of Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ University may apply for an alumni card free of charge. Your library alumni card provides access to both the Pilkington Library in Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ and the Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ University London campus at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

 

About Library Access for Alumni 

  • Books and more: Borrow up to 10 long loans at once using the self-issue machines. Books automatically renew up to 14 times.
  • Wi-Fi: Join the Wi-Fi network by registering on the Imago network. The Pilkington helpdesk / London reception will provide you with a code to access the network (changes weekly).
  • PCs: There is no access to computers for alumni, however you are welcome to bring your own device.
  • Printing: Use printers by downloading the software onto your device and topping up with print credits. See campus printing instructions for visitors for more information.
  • Eresources: Alumni are not entitled to access eresource subscriptions e.g. ebooks, databases, ejournals etc
  • Inter-Library Loans: The inter-library loan service is not available to alumni

Pilkington Library Applications (Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Campus)

Apply for an alumni card either in person at the enquiry desk or via the 

Please bring photo ID every time you visit to be allowed through the Pilkington library barriers. Your alumni card will be printed the first time you wish to borrow.  

The Pilkington library can be accessed by alumni during usual opening hours. We may restrict access during busy times, such as exam periods. Find out when access is restricted for external users via library announcements.

London Campus Library Applications 

Apply for an alumni card through the . We will then contact you to arrange collection. Your alumni card will be granted for 5 years after the date of application. 

Please bring photo ID and your alumni card to show at reception. You must sign in and out of the building each time you visit. 

The London campus library may be accessed by alumni between Monday – Friday, 9am-7pm. We reserve the right to restrict access during busy times. 

SCONUL Access Visitors

The SCONUL access scheme allows staff and students from participating higher education institutions to use academic libraries across the UK and Ireland.  

You may be eligible if you are a current student, member of staff or researcher affiliated with a participating institution. Your level of access depends on your status and the terms set by your home institution and the host library. 

You must  and wait for confirmation that your application has been approved before visiting. 

 

Pilkington Library (Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Campus) 

SCONUL services can be accessed during the enquiry desk opening hours. Please be aware that access for external users is unavailable during certain busy periods of the year. 

When you arrive, please show: 

  • A SCONUL access email confirming your approval to use the scheme 
  • ID from your home higher education institution 

Your external ticket will then be created to allow you to borrow up to 10 long loans which will each renew up to 14 times. 

 

London Campus Library 

Visiting hours for SCONUL users are from Monday-Friday, 9am-7pm. 

When you arrive, please show: 

  • A SCONUL access email confirming your approval to use the scheme 
  • ID from your home higher education institution 

 

You will then be issued with a visitor pass. You may borrow up to 10 long loan books which will each renew up to 14 times. If you would like to borrow books, library staff will need to be available to check them out to you. As such, we recommend emailing london-library@lboro.ac.uk in advance to arrange a time to visit. 

Retired staff/permanent staff in the Students Union (Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Campus)

Retired members of University staff and permanent staff in the Students Union may apply in writing to the University Librarian for an external borrowing ticket, which is provided free of charge. These tickets enable you to borrow up to ten long loans at a time for up to four weeks each. 

 

Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ College and RNIB staff (Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Campus)

Teachers at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ College or the RNIB College can request a staff borrowing ticket without charge on production of an employer's letter of introduction.

Campus Partners (Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Campus)

Campus partners of the University will be able to borrow as an external user at the Library using their Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ tenant ID card for free. This allows you to borrow up to ten long loans at a time. Please ask at the Help Desk to check the ID card has been added to our Library system the first time you want to borrow.

Members of the Public (Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Campus)

Members of the public over the age of 18 may use the Library free of charge for reference. You will need to show photo ID that proves you are over 18 (e.g. passport/drivers licence) at the Reception Desk on arrival to be let through the entrance barriers and will need to be let out through the exit barriers by the Reception Desk when leaving the building. Please note that the Library reserves the right to restrict access to external users during peak times (mainly Jan and mid May to mid June), so we advise you to check before you visit. 

Members of the public under the age of 18 must be accompanied at all times by a parent/guardian or teacher to use the Library.

Members of the public who live in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland may apply for an external borrowing ticket free of charge either in person at the Library Help Desk or via the online application form below as a result of the Universities Partnership agreement under the "" initiative. You will need to provide proof of ID and address to join under this scheme. These tickets enable you to borrow up to ten long loans at a time for up to four weeks each from the Pilkington Library. N.B. we will create the ticket on the first occassion you want to borrow books.

Access to London Campus (Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ Campus Users)

  • Students and PhD candidates whose home campus is in the East Midlands don’t have automatic access to the London campus.
  • If access to the London campus is required, it should be requested in advance and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • We generally encourage Midlands-based students and researchers to use their home campus; London campus access is usually approved in exceptional circumstances and for a temporary period.

Data retention periods

All user accounts will be deleted six years after expiring in order to meet our data responsibilities.

The University Library is legally obliged to retain the details of each document supply order that it makes for six years in accordance with the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (as amended) and related legislation. Personal data of customers collected by means of the Inter-Library Loan online request form will only be used by the University Library for purposes connected with the provision of an Inter-Library Loan and document supply service and will not be retained for more than six years.
